Prague Dec 13th 2018 Charles University Innovations Prague s. r. o. has successfylly managed to sell to the US based company Svenox Pharmaceuticals LLC a discovery originating from the research team of professor Alexandr Hrabalek from the Faculty of Phramacy of Charles University in Hradec Kralove.

US based company Svenox Pharmaceuticals LLC with roots in the Czech Republic, has bought from Charles University a discovery originating from the research team of professor Alexandr Hrabalek from the Faculty of Phramacy of Charles University in Hradec Kralove. The university was represented by its 100% owned subsidiary company Charles University Innovations Prague s.r.o. (CUIP). The discovery is about new types of compounds which can potentially be used for treatment of tuberculosis. The company Svenox Pharmaceuticals LLC has agreed in the contract to provide for the complex development of a new drug which is a very demanding proces with regards to time and budget as well as – in case of positive results – to manage its practical usage.

The new drug should be available not only in the United States of America but also in most of EU member states, India or South Africa.

Charles University represented by CUIP and therefore also its Czech research team will in case of the success of the new drug financially benefit from the earnings.

Charles University Rector – Prof. MUDr. Tomáš Zima, DrSc., MBA

„I am very glad for the success of the Faculty of Phramacy together with CUIP. This is an excellent example showing the neccessity for Charles University to have created such a subsidiary company and no one, not even me, expected to complete first contracts just a few month after its foundation. CUIP has completed its first task. I am happy to see that my decision to set up a subsidiary company has proven correct and effective.“

CUIP Director – Mgr. Otomar Sláma, MPA

„Together with the Centre for Knowledge and Technology Transfer of Charles University (CPPT UK) and the Faculty of Phramacy we have managed to effectlively achieve the expected result which makes us happy. We have enjoyed the cooperation with CPPT UK and we believe that the agreed split of competencies between CUIP and CPPT UK fulfills the expectations we had been hoping for since the very beginning of the CUIP project.“

Faculty of Phramacy of Charles University - Prof. PharmDr. Hrabálek, CSc. – research team leader

„We are very happy that the company Svenox Pharmaceuticals LLC has shown interest in our results from the research of antituberculotics and throughout the represenatation of CUIP we could sign a mutually benefitial contract. We hope that the research results from the Faculty of Phramacy of Charles University in Hradec Kralove will support the fight against this disease wich is still very widely spread all accross the world.

Svenox Pharmaceuticals - Richard Weinberg

„We would like to thank to the University as well as to CUIP for the effective and positive negotiation. The acquisition of the patent enables us to be part of a very interesting research with a great potential for more efficient and much safer treatment of this disease. Therefore we also intend to continue our close cooperation both with CUIP and the University in order to develop more new drugs.“

Charles University Innovations Prague s.r.o. (CUIP) founded on June 22nd 2018 is a subsidiary company fully owned by Charles University. Its activites are controlled by the supervizory board nominated by the rector of Charles University. The goal of CUIP is to provide wider and more effective scope of services with regards to innovations and commercialisation at Charles University and to connect academia with external investors when creating university spin-off companies and technology transfer. The expected long term aim is to increase the number of inventions and discoveries at the university which are actually used in practice and the growing interest from external partners to work together with the university throughout CUIP´s representation.

CUIP originates from the Centre for Knowledge and Technology Transfer of Charles University (CPPT UK) which is its partner. CPPT UK was established in 2007 and supported implementation of many reasearch projects. CUIP helps to CPPT UK in the last stages of commercialisation proces when negotiating with companies interesetd in the research results from the university. CPPT UK does not have the mechanism to proceed as effectively and fast as the current companies often require. Based on this need CUIP had been created after 2 years effort.

CUIP straight after its foundation started to fullfill its role and completed the first case haded ovet to it to negotiate. However, no one expeted CUIP to be successful already after the first half a year from its foundation. The first sales had originally been planned for only mid 2019.
