There are few places in Europe on par with the Carolinum, the ancient center of Charles University, providing education since the middle ages. In the nighttime, the atmosphere here is even stronger, as the gothic building looks and feels almost mystical. This could have been witnessed by anyone who came to visit during the Prague Museum Night, on Saturday, June 10.

This could have been witnessed by anyone who came to visit during the Prague Museum Night, on Saturday, June 10.

Last year, the Carolinum joined the Prague Museum Night map for the first time, and it was quick to attract crowds of eager visitors. And now it once more became a popular stop for people who walked all night from one museum to another, while the museums and other interesting sites were open until 1 AM.

“We’re touring the city; it’s our fourth stop during the night. I’ve told the grandchildren we have to see the Carolinum today, so they don’t have to wait until their graduation ceremony. We like the ceilings a lot, they’re really special. We also listened to the story on the history of the university,” said Jana Kočárová, who visited the Carolinum during the Prague Museum Night with her daughter and grandchildren.

In addition to the Great and Little Hall of the Carolinum, people had the chance to see the exposition focused on the history of the university, and take pictures with the famous statues of Charles IV or Master Jan Hus. Nevertheless, children seemed to enjoy the opportunity to take a picture with the real beadle even more.

Those who missed the chance to visit the Carolinum during the Prague Museum Night don’t have to regret it – the exposition on the history of Charles University is open every weekend. It also opens on business days if there’s another exposition in the Carolinum. The entrance fee is voluntary.

Hundreds of people also used the Prague Museum Night to visit other museums and areas managed by Charles University faculties. Especially big crowds were touring the Charles Square and Albertov, eager to gain more knowledge in medicine and science, so they visited especially the museums of the First Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Science. However, these venues were quite hard to visit due to the extraordinary attendance. Again, there’s no regret if anyone didn’t make it – the faculty museums are open to the public even outside these extraordinary events such as the Prague Museum Night. For opening hours, visit the websites of the faculties. The entrance is free of charge, or just for a very small fee. Guided tours can also be arranged.

Also the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics joined the Prague Museum Night, having provided extraordinary access to the Romanesque Rotunda of St. Wenceslas – the valuable heritage site built in the early 11^th century. Some time age, the faculty staff took an important part in the reconstruction of the rotunda. The visitors of the Lesser Town Square could also enjoy other program prepared by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, and find out that both subjects can easily be fun.
