CU improved its position in the Shanghai Ranking by 73 places

Charles University made another important achievement in the international comparison. In the current results of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, or the Shanghai Ranking), the university just narrowly missed the 200th mark, for the first time ever. Compared to the last year, the university’s position has improved by 73 places. The Shanghai Ranking is considered, together with the QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the most prestigious and influential international comparison of universities and colleges.

In the current ARWU, Charles University came 213th together with Universität zu Köln, Deakin University, Sichuan University and University of Kansas. In the last 13 years, the university always finished in the area between the 250th and 300th place; yet it was always the best among the Czech universities in the ranking. The current improvement is largely due to the fact that Charles University researchers have been finally included in the list of the world’s most quoted academics.

The Shanghai Ranking focuses on the research and creative activities of universities, based on six indicators: number of graduates or employees awarded by a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, number of academic staff members and researchers among the most quoted researchers in the world, number of papers in prestigious magazines Nature and Science, number of papers in the international bibliographic and citation database Web of Science, and the weighted score of the first five indicators divided by the number of academic staff.
