COURSES for International Students

Courses Taught in English and in Other Foreign Languages

During your Erasmus study stay at Charles University in Prague you will belong to one of the 17 faculties the university is formed out. The faculties are fairly independent and receive funding per student's head. Also all our Erasmus agreements are always linked with one faculty only. This is why you need to remember this important rule: you must take min. 51% of your subjects from the offer of your host faculty. The rest (max. 49% of subjects) can be selected from the other faculties of Charles University - if they correspond with your study field and there are places free in the course.

Every faculty offers a variety of courses and seminars in English, German, French and other foreign languages. Most of the faculties present the lists of courses on their websites - as listed below. Please, note that the final timetables are never known until ca. 14 days before the start of semester!

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FUTURE STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, FACULTY OF ARTS, FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS AND FACULTY OF HUMANITIES:

The best place to look for classes at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and Faculty of Humanities is the search engine in the Charles University's Student Information System (SIS), which includes a search engine here: http://is.cuni.cz/eng/studium. Please note, however, that this system includes classes from ALL the faculties of Charles University, taught in ALL languages, and that also classes taught in Czech are listed here. So please make sure you always choose "Faculty of Social Sciences", "Faculty of Arts", "Faculty of Mathematics and Physics" or "Faculty of Humanities" from the drop-down box, and always double-check the language of instruction and the semester in the course description.

Please, note that the Student Information System (SIS) might NOT include the full list of subjects taught in foreign languages at other faculties of Charles University! If you are nominated to study at any other faculty than the four faculties mentioned in this paragraph, use the faculty website (as indicated above) to search for suitable subjects. 85-90% of subjects taught in foreign languages is repeated yearly.

Czech Language Courses

Most faculties offer a number of Czech language classes at various levels, from beginners to intermediate. Incoming students are welcome to register for these. However, because the classes are not part of the standard curriculum, they are not financed by the Czech Ministry of Education. Some faculties therefore can make a charge to cover their costs. For details of different courses please contact the course/faculty co-ordinators.

Please, note that you should always preferably enroll into a Czech language course for beginners at your host faculty, no matter the different costs. Exceptions are granted if your host faculty does not organise a Czech language course (some smaller faculties don't, in particular in the summer semester period) and for advanced students. Advanced students need to approach the Faculty of Arts if they are searching for more advanced Czech language curriculum. Please, note that this might be paid.

Students usually need to apply for a Czech language course in their host faculty already in the Learning Agreement.
