Tail regeneration in lizards wins award worth 250,000 CZK

Mgr. Zuzana Starostová, Ph.D., from the CU Faculty of Science (PřF UK) has won the award for Most Successful Project in the L’Oréal For Women in Science awards. Her project examines the energy demands of the renewal of bodily tissue using the example of the regeneration of lizards’ tails. She wishes to use part of the award to improve her laboratory.

Three laureates received their grants at the awards ceremony for the eighth edition of the L’Oréal For Women in Science (35 and under) awards, which took place on 29 May. Also receiving awards were RNDr. Dagmara Sirová, Ph.D., for her study of bacteria that can positively affect the growth and vitality of plants, and RNDr. Kateřina Kůsová, Ph.D., for her study of silicon nanoparticles.

“In science, and not only in science, it is very important to not be afraid to ask, communicate and debate questions. This is the only way to achieve results in not just your professional, but also your private life,” said L’Oréal For Women in Science laureate Dr. Zuzana Starostová, whose study could, in the future, influence regeneration medicine.

In the final phase of the competition Starostová defended her study in front of an expert jury, which rated the 13 best scientific projects, which were this year selected from a total of 67 nominations. The L’Oréal For Women in Science project takes place under the auspices of UNESCO and the professional guarantor within the Czech Republic is the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Twenty-four Czech scientists have won the award in recent years, including PharmDr. Martina Čečková, Ph.D., from the CU Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové (2013), RNDr. Karolina Pecková, Ph.D., from the CU Faculty of Science (2012), Ing. Markéta Tesařová Ph.D., working at the 1st Faculty of Medicine (2011), RNDr. Marie Kalbáčová, Ph.D., from the CU 1st Faculty of Medicine (2009), MUDr. Jitka Bušková, Ph.D., from the CU 1st Faculty of Medicine (2009, honorary prize), prof. RNDr. Jana Roithová, Ph.D., from the CU Faculty of Science (2008) and doc. MUDr. Marta Kalousová, Ph.D., from the CU 1st Faculty of Medicine and the General University Hospital in Prague.
